People often mistake “Meltdown” with “Tantrum”. A meltdown is an intense reaction to an overwhelming sensory or emotional provocation. It is not a deliberate act of hostility or manipulation like a tantrum. During a meltdown , individuals with autism may feel out of control , experiencing worsened emotions and sensory overload.
When someone is having a meltdown, it’s important to remain calm ourselves. Offering support without judgement is crucial. Providing a quiet space , using simple and clear language , and avoiding physical contact unless necessary are all helpful strategies.
Remember , everyone’s experience with autism is unique, so it is essential to approach everyone with understanding and respect. We need to be aware of the triggers , providing support and responding with empathy.
