Should all staff working with children have autism awareness training?

All staff working with children should be given some from of training in autism awareness – be it in early years sector, primary school, or secondary school. Many children have missed out getting the right support because staff do not know how to relate with the children affected by autism.

Most children are diagnosed with autism any time after their third birthday. Before diagnosis there might be some indicators such as not answering to their names, no eye contact, delayed language skills, being a picky eater, not liking loud noises or bright lights.

It is not only the Special Educational Needs & Disability Coordinator’s (SENDco) responsibility to spot the signs but every practitioner’s responsibility. Being able to spot the signs early can enable the child to get the appropriate support early. This will enable children reach their full potential.
