I am writing about stimming. What exactly is stimming ? It is a phrase for self-stimulatory behaviour . It’s those repetitive movement or sounds that people with autism use to express themselves , regulate their emotions or simply find comfort.
Stimming can take many forms like rocking back and forth, hand flapping , spinning objects or even using fidgets’ toys . It’s essential to understand that stimming is a natural and healthy way for children with autism to cope with the sensory overload they may experience.
Let’s bust some myths about stimming. One common misconception is that stimming is just a bad habit that needs to be stopped. But here is the truth , suppressing stimming can be harmful and distressing . It’s like asking someone not to yawn when they are tired. Instead of trying to stop stimming, Lets create an environment where children with autism can stim freely without judgement.
Stimming can be quite calming and help children focus better. So next time you see someone stimming, don’t judge or stare . Embrace their unique way of expressing themselves. Remember, stimming is not exclusive to autism. People without autism also engage in stimming behaviours . It’s just that it is stimming can be more noticeable with children with autism.
